Testing hydrolysate powders typically begins with proximate analysis for moisture, ash, fat, and total nitrogen. Protein content is calculated from nitrogen using a conversion factor, most often Kjeldahl or Dumas combustion. Peptide size distribution is assessed by size-exclusion chromatography, reversed-phase HPLC, or mass spectrometry. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis can show residual intact protein bands. Free amino groups may be quantified by colorimetric assays to estimate cleavage extent, though different methods and laboratories are not always directly comparable.
Dry hydrolysate powders are generally stable when kept cool, dry, and sealed, while moisture uptake can cause caking, Maillard browning, and loss of solubility. Higher temperatures accelerate these changes and may alter flavor. Recommended storage conditions often fall between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius with relative humidity below 60 percent. Once reconstituted, liquid hydrolysate solutions support microbial growth and may develop bitterness or haze over time. Packaging in moisture-barrier containers with desiccants helps maintain quality during transport and warehouse storage.
Laboratories characterize whey protein hydrolysate by several complementary methods. Total nitrogen or Kjeldahl analysis estimates crude protein, while amino acid analysis gives a more detailed composition. Size-exclusion chromatography and mass spectrometry separate peptides by molecular weight and can reveal the distribution of chain lengths. Degree of hydrolysis is often calculated from free amino groups using trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid or o-phthaldialdehyde assays. No single measurement captures all relevant properties, so specifications usually combine protein content, peptide profile, moisture, ash, and microbial limits.
Storage stability depends on moisture, temperature, oxygen, and packaging. Dry hydrolysate powders are typically stable for months to years when kept cool and sealed, but they can absorb water and cake if exposed to humid air. Higher temperatures accelerate Maillard reactions between peptides and residual sugars, leading to browning and flavor changes. Lipid oxidation can occur if residual fat is present, producing off-odors. Once a powder is reconstituted, microbial growth becomes a concern, so liquid forms require refrigeration or other preservation steps.
| Property | Value | Notes |

| Ash content | 1–8% | Depends on demineralization and neutralization salts |
| Microbiological limit | Total aerobic count <10^4 CFU/g typical | Specifications vary by grade and market |
| Shelf life | 12–24 months unopened | Cool, dry storage extends stability |
Quality control checks identity, composition, and contaminants. Moisture, ash, fat, and carbohydrate are measured by standard methods, and microbiological limits are set for total counts, coliforms, and specific pathogens. Heavy metals and pesticide residues may be monitored depending on market requirements. Adulteration with intact whey protein or individual amino acids is possible, so peptide fingerprints and free amino acid profiles can help verify authenticity. Regulatory frameworks vary: some countries treat hydrolyzed whey as a conventional dairy ingredient, while infant formula uses face additional compositional rules. Which marker peptides best confirm source and processing remains an open analytical question.
Storage stability depends on moisture, temperature, and packaging. Dry powders with low water activity resist microbial growth, but they can still absorb water, develop off-colors through Maillard reactions, or oxidize residual lipids. Sealed containers kept in a cool, dry place are standard. Stability studies typically monitor moisture, solubility, color, peptide size, and microbial counts over months. Established practice favors low humidity and moderate temperatures. How brief excursions above recommended conditions affect peptide profiles and sensory qualities is less predictable and may depend on the specific product matrix.
Stability and storage practices affect measured quality over time. Hydrolysate powders are hygroscopic and can absorb moisture, leading to caking, Maillard browning, and reduced solubility. Cool, dry storage in sealed containers limits these changes, while high humidity and warm temperatures accelerate them. Microbiological testing for total aerobic counts, yeasts, molds, and specified pathogens is typical for food ingredients. Regulatory status varies by country; in many jurisdictions hydrolyzed whey protein is regulated as a food ingredient rather than a drug, and claims about reduced allergenicity require specific substantiation.
Quality control for whey protein hydrolysate begins with verifying protein content, moisture, ash, and fat using standard food analysis methods. Total nitrogen by Kjeldahl or Dumas combustion gives an estimate of protein, often calculated with a dairy-specific conversion factor. Amino acid analysis after acid hydrolysis quantifies individual residues but destroys tryptophan and may convert glutamine and asparagine. The extent of peptide bond cleavage is usually estimated by measuring free amino groups, soluble nitrogen, or trichloroacetic acid-soluble peptides. These tests are operationally defined and can give different results across laboratories.
Peptide size distribution is central to product characterization because biological and functional effects often depend on molecular weight. Size-exclusion chromatography, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, and capillary electrophoresis can separate peptides by size or hydrophobicity. Mass spectrometry provides sequence-level information and can detect marker peptides, though it is less common for routine lot release. For allergen control, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays estimate residual intact protein or specific milk proteins, but results depend on antibody recognition and may not detect small peptides. No single method captures the full composition.
Freshly made, raw tempeh remains edible for a few days at room temperature. It is neither acidic nor does it contain significant amounts of alcohol. It, however, shows greater resistance to spoilage processes such as lipid peroxidation than unfermented soybeans due to its antioxidant contents. Cooking methods such as tempe kering, the deep-fried and seasoned bits of tempeh allows Tempeh to last for a month or more and still be good to consume, if cooked correctly and stored properly in an air-tight jar. The deep-frying process removes the moisture, preventing further fermentation and deterioration, thus prolonging its shelf life.
=== Intellectual property issues === Ayahuasca has stirred debate regarding intellectual property protection of traditional knowledge. In 1986 the US Patent and Trademarks Office (PTO) allowed the granting of a patent on the ayahuasca vine B. caapi. It allowed this patent based on the assumption that ayahuasca's properties had not been previously described in writing. Several public interest groups, including the Coordinating Body of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) and the Coalition for Amazonian Peoples and Their Environment (Amazon Coalition) objected. In 1999 they brought a legal challenge to this patent which had granted a private US citizen "ownership" of the knowledge of a plant that is well-known and sacred to many Indigenous peoples of the Amazon, and used by them in religious and healing ceremonies. Later that year the PTO issued a decision rejecting the patent, on the basis that the petitioners' arguments that the plant was not "distinctive or novel" were valid; however, the decision did not acknowledge the argument that the plant's religious or cultural values prohibited a patent. In 2001, after an appeal by the patent holder, the US Patent Office reinstated the patent, albeit to only a specific plant and its asexually reproduced offspring. The law at the time did not allow a third party such as COICA to participate in that part of the reexamination process. The patent, held by American entrepreneur Loren Miller, expired in 2003.
=== Effects in females === LH supports theca cells in the ovaries that provide androgens and hormonal precursors for estradiol production. At the time of menstruation, FSH initiates follicular growth, specifically affecting granulosa cells. With the rise in estrogens, LH receptors are also expressed on the maturing follicle, which causes it to produce more estradiol. Eventually, when the follicle has fully matured, a spike in 17α-hydroxyprogesterone production by the follicle inhibits the production of estrogens. Previously, the preovulatory LH surge was attributed to a decrease in estrogen-mediated negative feedback of GnRH in the hypothalamus, subsequently stimulating the release of LH from the anterior pituitary. Some studies, however, attribute the LH surge to positive feedback from estradiol after production by the dominant follicle exceeds a certain threshold. Exceptionally high levels of estradiol induce hypothalamic production of progesterone, which stimulates elevated GnRH secretion, triggering a surge in LH. The increase in LH production only lasts for 24 to 48 hours. This "LH surge" triggers ovulation, thereby not only releasing the egg from the follicle, but also initiating the conversion of the residual follicle into a corpus luteum that, in turn, produces progesterone to prepare the endometrium for a possible implantation. LH is necessary to maintain luteal function for the second two weeks of the menstrual cycle.

Plasma concentrations of methadone in recovering addicts can reach 4 μM during therapy, so the actions of methadone at both the hERG potassium channel and the Nav1.5 sodium channel are possibly clinically relevant in producing cardiac side effects. This also suggests that levomethadone is not completely free of cardiac toxicity.
"I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon, the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. It was interesting to think that the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the first food eaten there, were communion elements." —Buzz Aldrin Aldrin received the Eucharist in the same hour that his local church did on that Sunday Sabbath and he later stated that "I sensed especially strongly my unity with our church back home, and with the Church everywhere".

== 1971–88 == South Africa was the indirect cause of the 1976 Olympic boycott. A New Zealand rugby union tour of South Africa prompted African countries to demand that the New Zealand Olympic team be excluded from the games. The IOC demurred on the grounds that rugby union was not an Olympic sport and the New Zealand Rugby Union was not affiliated to the New Zealand Olympic Committee. Of 28 African invitees, 26 boycotted the Games, joined by Iraq and Guyana. South Africa continued to compete at the (Summer) Paralympics until excluded by the Dutch government from the 1980 Games. The country had a racially desegregated parasport team from 1975. South Africa was expelled from the International Paralympic Committee in 1985. The IOC adopted a declaration against "apartheid in sport" on 21 June 1988, for the total isolation of apartheid sport.

Juan Vucetich, an Argentine chief police officer, created the first method of recording the fingerprints of individuals on file. In 1892, after studying Galton's pattern types, Vucetich set up the world's first fingerprint bureau. In that same year, Francisca Rojas of Necochea was found in a house with neck injuries whilst her two sons were found dead with their throats cut. Rojas accused a neighbour, but despite brutal interrogation, this neighbour would not confess to the crimes. Inspector Alvarez, a colleague of Vucetich, went to the scene and found a bloody thumb mark on a door. When it was compared with Rojas' prints, it was found to be identical with her right thumb. She then confessed to the murder of her sons. A Fingerprint Bureau was established in Calcutta (Kolkata), India, in 1897, after the Council of the Governor General approved a committee report that fingerprints should be used for the classification of criminal records. Working in the Calcutta Anthropometric Bureau, before it became the Fingerprint Bureau, were Azizul Haque and Hem Chandra Bose. Haque and Bose were Indian fingerprint experts who have been credited with the primary development of a fingerprint classification system eventually named after their supervisor, Sir Edward Richard Henry. The Henry Classification System, co-devised by Haque and Bose, was accepted in England and Wales when the first United Kingdom Fingerprint Bureau was founded in Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police headquarters, London, in 1901. Sir Edward Richard Henry subsequently achieved improvements in dactyloscopy.

There have been several structures solved for this class of enzymes, given PDB accession codes, and published in peer-reviewed journals. At least 4 such structures have been solved using pig enzymes: PDB: 1OHV, PDB: 1OHW, PDB: 1OHY, PDB: 1SF2, and at least 4 such structures have been solved in Escherichia coli: PDB: 1SFF, PDB: 1SZK, PDB: 1SZS, PDB: 1SZU. There are actually some differences between the enzyme structure for these organisms. E. coli enzymes of GABA-T lack an iron-sulfur cluster that is found in the pig model. Amino acid residues found in the active site of 4-aminobutyrate transaminase include Lys-329, which are found on each of the two subunits of the enzyme. This site will also bind with a pyridoxal 5'- phosphate co-enzyme. This structure with repeated sequences is responsible for frequent duplication events, which create new genes, and recombination events, at the origin of combination diversity. These properties generate diversity at an individual scale and therefore contribute to adaptation of organisms to their environments. For example, in Plasmodium falciparum during interphase of the erythrocytic stage, the chromosomic extremities are gathered at the cell nucleus periphery, where they undergo frequent deletion and telomere position effect (TPE). This event, in addition to expansion and deletion of subtelomeric repeats, gives rise to chromosome size polymorphisms and thus, subtelomeres undergo epigenetic and genetic controls. Because of the properties of subtelomeres, Plasmodium falciparum evades host immunity by varying the antigenic and adhesive character of infected erythrocytes (see Subtelomeric transcripts).
=== Coordination compounds === In an acidic aqueous solution, thorium occurs as the tetrapositive aqua ion [Th(H2O)9]4+, which has tricapped trigonal prismatic molecular geometry: at pH < 3, the solutions of thorium salts are dominated by this cation. The Th4+ ion is the largest of the tetrapositive actinide ions, and depending on the coordination number can have a radius between 0.95 and 1.14 Å. It is quite acidic due to its high charge, slightly stronger than sulfurous acid: thus it tends to undergo hydrolysis and polymerisation (though to a lesser extent than Fe3+), predominantly to [Th2(OH)2]6+ in solutions with pH 3 or below, but in more alkaline solution polymerisation continues until the gelatinous hydroxide Th(OH)4 forms and precipitates out (though equilibrium may take weeks to be reached, because the polymerisation usually slows down before the precipitation). As a hard Lewis acid, Th4+ favours hard ligands with oxygen atoms as donors: complexes with sulfur atoms as donors are less stable and are more prone to hydrolysis. High coordination numbers are the rule for thorium due to its large size. Thorium nitrate pentahydrate was the first known example of coordination number 11, the oxalate tetrahydrate has coordination number 10, and the borohydride (first prepared in the Manhattan Project) has coordination number 14. These thorium salts are known for their high solubility in water and polar organic solvents.

Keep the powder sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors. Typical targets are 15 to 25 degrees Celsius and low relative humidity. After opening, use within the manufacturer's recommended period.
Size-exclusion chromatography and mass spectrometry provide molecular weight or mass information. Electrophoresis can reveal intact protein bands and larger fragments. No single method captures the complete peptide profile.
Not always, because assays and calculation methods differ. Values may reflect free amino groups, pH change, or nitrogen solubility. Comparisons require method details and reference standards.
Degree of hydrolysis is commonly estimated by quantifying free amino groups with colorimetric assays such as o-phthaldialdehyde or trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid. The result is expressed as a percentage of total peptide bonds cleaved. Because different assays can give different values, method details matter when comparing products.
